You can argue that medical marijuana struggled to find legitimacy until news broke of a new cannabinoid, cannabidiol or CBD. Although THC has enormous medicinal potential in its own right, it was still largely seen as an illicit substance because of the psychoactive properties. That all changed with the development of a CBD dominant strain of cannabis called Charlotte’s Web.

The medicinal value of CBD was clear from the get-go. Charlotte, the namesake of the Charlottes Web strain,  was a little girl with intractable epilepsy. Her parents gave her CBD and drastically reduced the frequency and severity of Charlotte’s seizures. All without also getting high.

What are the Known Benefits of CBD?

First and foremost, the latest literature continues to demonstrate CBD as safe to use, even in high doses. Side effects are rare, and when they do occur, they are mild, like diarrhea, dry mouth, and tiredness. Medical professionals often note that CBD tinctures have a better safety profile than many of the most common pharmaceuticals on the market today.

Cannabidiol, extracted from cannabis, is currently undergoing a huge upswing in research covering a wide variety of health issues and diseases. Until full-blown clinical trials complete, it’s unwise to proclaim CBD as a miracle cure for all health issues, but still, the preliminary research is extremely compelling. Here are some of the research areas of most interest so far:

Anxiety is the number one reason why people currently take CBD oil.

Anti-Inflammatory: CBD is a known powerful anti-inflammatory compound. Its anti-inflammatory properties are widely explored in the literature. Considering inflammation is responsible for, or at the very least linked to many chronic diseases like Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, autoimmune disorders, and diabetes, there is massive potential for CBD to displace pharmaceutical solutions to inflammation.

Anti-Anxiety: Anxiety is the number one reason why people currently take CBD oil.  At the research level, there is also substantial evidence suggesting CBD’s powerful capacity to reduce anxiety. In one often-cited study, participants with previously untreated social anxiety disorder took CBD before a public speech. Not only did they describe lower anxiety before and during the test, their heart rate, temperature, and blood pressure were also lower than the control group.

Anti-Tumour: It is a bit early to start prescribing CBD to cure cancer, but in laboratory studies, CBD has shown promise for fighting tumor growth. It seems to promote cancer cell suicide, prevent metastasis, slow or prevent tumor growth and prevent the movement of cancer cells. It’s undergoing research for many different types of cancers, including brain, lung, prostate, bladder, and more.

Anti-Addiction: There is also evidence to suggest that dosing with CBD can help reduce nicotine cravings. Participants of a study who took CBD oil smoked 40 percent fewer cigarettes than the group that did not use CBD oil. Additionally, new research suggests that CBD may reduce opioid dependence.
